(12/02/14) Sister Mary Lea Malley, RSM, 83, a Sister of Mercy, a retired educator and administrator, passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland, Rhode Island.
Born Elizabeth Barbara Malley in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Elizabeth (Walsh) Malley. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1948 and professed her vows on August 16, 1954. She was a graduate of the former St. Xavier Academy in Providence and earned a Bachelor of Education from the former Catholic Teachers College of Providence, and a Master of Education from Rhode Island College. She did post-graduate work in Leadership at Boston College.
Sister was also a certified youth minister for the Diocese of Providence. She taught in elementary education and was a principal in both the Dioceses of Providence and Fall River. Her last seven years in education were at Mercymount Country Day School in Cumberland as the Financial Officer. Upon retiring after 50 years in education, she worked at University Cardiology Foundation in Providence.
In addition to the Sisters of Mercy, her religious family, she leaves a brother, James J. Malley and his wife, Patricia of Warwick, RI; a brother-in-law, Raymond of North Attleboro, MA and twenty nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was the sister of the late Eileen L. Malley, Roberta J. Trainor, Patricia M. Delisle, Stephen C. Malley, Jr., and Marjorie A. Morrissey.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 11:00 am at Mount St. Rita Chapel, Cumberland, RI. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:45 am with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 am. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
