(02/14/13) Julien L. Verhoest, 83, of Leesburg, Florida, was born March 23, 1929 in Flint, Michigan and died Monday, February 11, 2013. He worked for General Dynamic in Groton, CT for 28 years retiring in 1985 and moved to Leesburg in 1990 from Rhode Island. He loved motorcycles and continued to ride his scooter.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vivian (Frates) of Leesburg, FL; daughter, Nancy A. Gartland of Fruitland Park, FL; brother, Ernest Verhoest of Woonsocket, RI; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the Gorton-Menard Funeral Home & Crematory, 721 Washington Street, Coventry, RI.

Sister Angela M King - Cumberland, RI
(02/14/13) Sister Angela Marie King, 92, (formerly Sister Mary Alexine), a Sister of Mercy and a former teacher, principal, and pastoral care giver, passed away on February 13, 2013 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland. Born in Providence she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Mary (Kernan) King. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1937 and professed perpetual vows on August 16, 1943.
Sister Angela was a graduate of St. Xavier Academy. She earned her bachelors degree in education from Catholic Teachers College in Providence and a masters degree from St Bonaventure University in New York. She also was awarded a Certificate in Theological Studies from Providence College.
Sister Angela\\\'s teaching ministry included Sacred Heart School in East Providence, Tyler and Immaculate Conception Schools in Providence and St. Mary School in Pawtucket where she was Principal. She also taught at St. Mary Academy- BayView from 1969 to 1976.
In 1976 she joined the Pastoral Care Department of St. Joseph Hospital, Providence, where she continued ministering until 1997. Sister Angela ministered and served the in the Diocese of Providence for 57 years. Always involved, in her later years she was a neighborhood volunteer in St. Rose of Lima Parish and then assisted in the office of St Kevin Church and was involved in the Ministry of Prayer. In addition to her ministry activities, Sister Angela on her 90th birthday was affectionately dubbed the \\\"Matriarch\\\" of her extended family of many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy, Sister Angela leaves many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Mary C. Reilly, Helen F. Cavanagh, and Francis J. King.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 15, 2013, at 11 am in Mount St. Rita Chapel, Cumberland. Visitation will be at the Health Centre from 9 am to 10:50 am with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 am. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

(02/15/13) Michael J. Melia, 58, of Center St., Fall River, husband of Susan M. (Charette) Melia, passed away at home Thursday, February 14, 2013 after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born in Fall River, the son of the late Raymond and Lucille (Dupuis) Melia. Michael was a graduate of St. Anne School, Class of 1968 and Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, Class of 1972. He was a longtime employee of General Dynamics Electric Boat Division at Quonset Point, North Kingstown where he worked as a machinist for 37 years. He was an avid member of Alcoholics Anonymous where he dedicated his time to helping people with the same addiction. He enjoyed watching the Patriots and Red Sox, bowling with his wife in the Guys and Dolls League in Somerset, laughing at the Three Stooges and smoking a good cigar with his buddy Tony.
Besides his wife of 37 years he is survived by 2 children, a daughter, Sherri Melia of Fall River, MA and a son, Jeffrey Melia of Fall River, MA; a brother, Raymond Melia of Fall River, MA; a granddaughter, Paige Langen of Norwich, CT; his dog Sarge and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held Monday at 8:00 AM from the AUCLAIR FUNERAL HOME, 690 So. Main St., Fall River with a funeral mass in St. Anne Church at 9:00 AM. Cremation to follow.

Richard "Dick" L Surprenant - Westerly, RI
(02/16/13) Richard Louis Surprenant, 80, of Canyon Drive, Westerly, passed away at the Westerly Health Center on Thursday, February 14, 2013.
Richard “Dick” was born on July 31, 1932, the son of the late Romeo and Jeanette (Coderre) Surprenant. He graduated from the Norwich Free Academy, Class of 1949. After proudly serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, he attended Hillyer College in Hartford, CT.
On October 15, 1955, he married Gertrude “Betty” Treat of Norwich and they raised their family initially in Norwich and later in Central Village, CT. Dick was a member of the American Legion in Moosup, CT and was active in local youth sports programs. He was also a member of St. Clare Church in Misquamicut, RI. Dick retired from United Nuclear in Uncasville, CT in 1991 and he and Betty then enjoyed many years sailing the GETS II along Narrangansett Bay and Long Island Sound with Molly, their beloved sea dog. Dick was also an avid craftsman who honed his natural talents in woodworking and whose handmade designs grace the homes of his extended family and friends today.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of 57 years of Westerly; his son Richard Surprenant of Westerly and his sons Jared and Kyle and their mother Betsy; his daughter Renee Surprenant and her husband Joseph Breen and their children Colin and Haley of Woodstock, CT; his daughter Michelle Goettlich and her husband Keith and their children Dylan and his wife Kristen of San Francisco, CA and Kylie of Rochester, MA; his daughter, Paula Fontana of West Hartford and her children, Lena and Lorenzo, and their father Michael Fontana; his son, John Surprenant and his wife Melissa of Dudley, MA and their daughter, Peyton; his son, Jeffrey Surprenant and his wife Jill of Agawam, MA and their daughters, Samantha, Emily and Madelyn; and his brother, Robert Surprenant and his wife Marilyn of Hudson Falls, NY.
A memorial mass will be held on Friday, February 22, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at The Church of St. Clare, 62 Crandall Avenue, Misquamicut, RI 02891.

(02/16/13) Gloria T. (Trombino) Pucci, 91, of Dixon Street, Westerly, passed away on Saturday morning, February 16, 2013 at the Westerly Hospital. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Thomas A. Pucci in 1991. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Katherine R. and John F. Klewin of Mystic, her daughter and son-in-law, Sally A. and Robert F. Vidal of North Stonington, her daughter, Mary Lou Richmond of Hopkinton, seven grandchildren, Lauren Casady, Kevin Casady, Brian Casady, Otis “Bud” Burge, Brandon Burge, Karen Gauthier and Katie Klewin, nine great-grandchildren and her sister, Clara Buck of Westerly. Gloria was also pre-deceased by her son-in-law, William Richmond.
Mrs. Pucci was born in Bradford on June 30, 1921, the daughter of the late Antonio and Rosa (Quattromani) Trombino. For many years, she was a weaver for the George C. Moore Company of Westerly. She was the chairwoman of the Loyal Order of Moose, a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Bradford Citizen’s Club and a volunteer companion at the Adult Day Center of Westerly.
Gloria enjoyed knitting, crocheting, bingo and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 10:00 am at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 7 Church Street, Bradford. There will be no procession from the funeral home. Burial will take place at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly.

(02/16/13) Paul J. Otis, 86, of Colonial Ave, Tiverton, husband of the late Dorothy Ann (Bassette) Otis, entered into rest Friday, February 15, 2013 at the R.I. Veterans Home, Bristol.
A Navy veteran of WWII and welder, he was employed at Quonset Point, RI. A ham radio operator, he enjoyed rebuilding antique radios and fishing.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Alvarez, a sister, Theresa Snizek of Tiverton, and several grandchildren. He was the son of the late Honorius and Marie Jeanne (Lambert) Otis and the brother of the late Robert A. Otis.

Helen was an associate at Vishay Electro-Films for seven years. She enjoyed bowling, running and completed a United Healthcare Half Marathon in Newport, Rhode Island.
Besides her husband and parents she leaves a daughter, Johanna L. Pereira and a son, Nicolas S. Pereira both at home; a sister, Tammy Horowitz; two brothers, Joseph and Leo Dauphinais all of West Warwick and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

(02/18/13) Albert C. Laprise, 93, formerly of Irving Street and “The Landmark”, Fall River, husband of 54 years of the late Rhea (Mercier) Laprise, died Monday, February 18, 2013.
A graduate of Msgr. Prevost High School, Class of 1939 and Army veteran of WW II, he owned and operated Al’s Variety, Fourth St., for many years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of the former Notre Dame Parish, the Msgr. Prevost Council, Knights of Columbus and the Over-the-hill gang.
He leaves seven children, Lorraine Silva and her husband Roger of Fall River, Muriel Imondi and her husband William of Hope, RI, Paulette “Pat” Levesque and her husband Laurent of Swansea, Richard Laprise and his wife Diane of Fall River, Michael Laprise and his wife Sue of Zuehl, Texas, Denise Lariviere and her husband Normand of Westport and Paul Laprise of Fall River; 25 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandsons and nieces and nephews. He was the son of the late Joseph and Victoria (Levesque) Laprise and the brother of the late Lorette Marchand and Eva, Robert, Ovide, Alfred and Oliva, Wilfred and Arthur Laprise.

Cape Cod, MA - Hilda Marie (Blais) Dumaine of Cape Cod, MA passed away Sunday February 17, 2013 after a brief illness at the age of 98. She was the wife of the late Alpha Dumaine, formerly of Pawtucket, RI.
Hilda was a Registered Nurse at the Miriam Hospital in Providence for many years until she retired. She and her family attended St. Cecilia Church of Pawtucket for many years while they resided in this area. She enjoyed baking, camping and spending time with her family. She moved to Florida and the Cape to be closer to her children.
She leaves two daughters, Eileen Benoit of Callahan, Florida and Ellen Bedard of Barnstable, MA; a son, Ernest Dumaine and his wife, Lainie of Sagamore Beach, MA, six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and many nephews and nieces.

(02/19/13) Morrill F. Smith, 80, of Cranston passed away Monday, February 18, 2013 at Kent Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Mary Jo (Skomro) Smith. Born in Brunswick, Maine, he was the son of the late Morrill F. and Helen (Talbot) Smith.
He graduated from the University of Maine in 1959 followed by a career of working with youth as a YMCA Camp Director in the cities of Madison, NJ, Springfield, MA, Keene, NH, Syracuse, NY and from 1978-1985 at the Camp Westwood YMCA in Coventry, RI. He also served in The United States Army during the Korean War.
He was the loving father of Susan E. Carlson and her husband Richard of Swansea, MA, Cheryl A. Anika and her husband Robert of Cranston and the late Michael J. Smith. Devoted grandfather of Robert, Kristina and Tricia. Cherished great-grandfather of Jackson.

(02/19/13) Lincoln – Merrill S. Loynds, Jr., 82, of Old River Road and formerly of Cumberland, died Monday, February 18, 2013 at Overlook Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Pascoag. He was the beloved husband of Mary A. (Tebbetts) Loynds. Mr. and Mrs. Loynds were married 59 years.
Born in Central Falls, a son of the late Merrill S. and May (Lancaster) Loynds, he had lived in Cumberland for 40 years before moving to Lincoln 8 years ago.
Mr. Loynds was the owner and operator of Display Services, Pawtucket, and later, Central Finishing, Central Falls for many years before retiring.
He served in the U.S. Navy reserves.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Linda Merrill-Contonio and her husband, Jack Contonio of Yarmouthport, MA; two sons, Steven A. Loynds and his wife, Ginny of North Attleboro, MA and Brian S. Loynds and his wife, Colette of Burrillville; one sister, Ruth Aldrich of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Marissa, Meghan, Nikki, Tyler and Jaime Loynds; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be held FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22 at 10 A.M. at BELLOWS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston.

Timothy T Scudder - Warwick, RI
(02/19/13) Timothy T. Scudder, 53, of Lawn Avenue died Sunday at Rhode Island Hospital.
Born in West Hartford, CT, the son of the late David A. and Nancy S. (Steele) Scudder, he was a resident of Mamaroneck, NY for twenty seven years before moving to Warwick, RI two years ago. Mr. Scudder was a salesman for Miller’s Toy Store for twelve years before retiring in 2007. He was a member of the Edgewood Yacht Club and Save the Bay.
He leaves 4 daughters, Ali S. Tuthill of Jamaica Plain, MA; Hillary R. Scudder of Boston, MA; Sarah A. Scudder and Molly S. Scudder both of Mamaroneck, NY; 2 sons, Robert N. Scudder and Richard T. Scudder both of New York, NY; 2 sisters, Linda Casey of New Hartford, CT and Sarah Evans of Marlborough, CT; his former wife, Caroline C. Scudder of Mamaroneck, NY; 1 granddaughter, Henley Tuthill.
Funeral services will be Friday at12:00 P.M. in the Frank P. Trainor & Sons Funeral Home, 982 Warwick Avenue, Warwick, RI. (02/19/13) Marie S. Townsend (Archambault), 83, of Arcadia Road, Exeter died Tuesday at the Coventry Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Everett A. Townsend.
Born in West Warwick, a daughter of the late Henore and Bertha (Senay) Archambault, she had been a long time Coventry resident. Mrs. Townsend was a homemaker.
She leaves 7 daughters, Suzanne M. Townsend of South Kingstown; Michelle L. Bucci of West Warwick; Gisele L. Smith of Coventry; Jacqueline M. Warren of Coventry; Colleen M. Archetto of Exeter; Melanie S. Cooley of North Kingstown; Lynn D. Cunniff of Scituate; 2 sisters, Louise Workman of Florida and Martha Richtarik of Coventry; 2 brothers Charles Archambault of Virginia and Guy Archambault of Jamestown.11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Joseph "Joe" Remigio - Somerset, MA
(02/19/13) Joseph “Joe” Remigio, 89, of Somerset, husband of Almedina “Amy” (Gouveia) Remigio and son of the late Jose Remigio and Marianna (Sousa) Remigio Costa, died Friday, February 15, 2013.
A member of Laborers International Union of North America since July, 1955, he was a road construction supervisor and had worked at the Remigio Family Farm on the Old Quirk Estate in Somerset. He was a member of St. John of God Parish.
Besides his wife of 63 years he leaves godchildren including Paula (Gouveia) Doucette, her husband George and their children Amy, James, Riley and Sarah; his brother, Joseph Diogo, his wife, Diane, and their children, Dr. Jason Diogo and Jacqueline Ferreira and several cousins.
His funeral will be held Monday, February 25 at 9:00 AM from the AUCLAIR FUNERAL HOME, 690 So. Main St., Fall River with a funeral mass in St. John of God Church at 10:00 AM. Burial, Notre Dame Cemetery.
