(07/19/12) Cranston – Richard W. Cornell, CPD, Retired, 85, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at The Bridges at Bent Creek, Mechanicsburg, PA. He was the beloved husband of the late Naomi A. (Story) Cornell, RN. Born in Cranston, a son of the late William O. and Minerva E. (Tanner) Cornell, he served in the United States Coast Guard-Merchant Marine during World War II. He was a patrolman for the Cranston Police Department for twenty-three years before retiring in 1973. A fifty year member of the Masonic Fraternity he belonged to Ionic Lodge #28 F&AM, Greene, RI; Humane Lodge #21, Rochester, NH; the Scottish Rite Valley of Portsmouth-Dover, NH; the New Hampshire Consistory in the Valley of Nashua and the Bektash Shriners of Concord, NH where for many years he was active with its Clown Unit. He is survived by four children: Mark A. Cornell and his wife Linda of Coventry, Paul R. Cornell and his wife Lorraine of Manchester, NH, Stephanie J. Richardson and her husband Ken of Mechanicsburg, PA and Kim Cornell of East Wakefield, NH and ten grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Rowland G., Stephen T. and David P. Cornell. Funeral service Monday, July 23, 2012 at 10:00 AM in the Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. (07/19/12) Cranston – Ruth V. Elliot, 90, formerly of Falmouth Road, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Elmhurst Extended Care Facility, Providence. She was the beloved wife of the late Donald W. Elliot. Born in 1922, she was the daughter of the late Leo Clare Johnston and Margie (Jacobs) Johnston. She was a licensed brokerage assistant, retired from Merrill Lynch. She was a member of Woodridge Congregational Church U.C.C., Cranston. She loved to paint, golf, play bridge and keep up with stock market news. She enjoyed her many lifelong friends from Michigan, Toledo, OH and Cranston and is remembered as an intelligent, strong and independent woman. She is survived by her son Robert A. Elliot of North Scituate; her daughter Cynthia A. Elliot of Alexandria, VA; three grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She was the sister of the late Leo Johnston and Betty (Johnston) Forbes. She was the manager of the office of Dr. Anis Rahman for more than twenty years. She leaves two children, Robert Levesque and his wife Elizabeth of Marlboro and Kimberly Cormier of Fall River; grandchildren, Brittany Lyn Estacio, Robert L. Rebello, Jr. and James Levesque; sisters, Jean Fernandez of No. Dartmouth and Carol Cote and her husband Edward of Somerset; and nieces, Kendra Lychwala and Kerri Cote Plaud. (07/19/12) D\'AMORE, MARY L., (Recchia), 89, of East Greenwich, died peacefully Tuesday at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. She was the wife of the late Salvatore J. D\'Amore. Born in Cranston, she was the daughter of the late Virginia (Colomello) Recchia and Pietro Recchia. Mrs. D\'Amore worked as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone Co., The Outlet Co., and retired from Victoria Creations. She lived in Cranston all her life until moving to East Greenwich in 2007. She was an avid connector with people she loved. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, bingo, dancing and playing the piano. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara M. Ricci and husband Wayne; her grandchildren, Amy, Lauren and Matthew Ricci and his wife Mary; a brother Peter Recchia and sister Betty Bunting. She was a sister of the late Priscilla Del Bonis, Philomena Rocchio, Jenny Caputo, Joseph, Orlando, Edmund, Lawrence and Charles Recchia. (07/20/12) Seekonk – Claire M. (Tetreault) Powers, 85, passed away Friday, July 20, 2012. She was the beloved wife of Robert E. Powers for forty-one years. Born in Southbridge, MA, she was a daughter of Noe and Hermine (Livernois) Tetreault, and a sister of Joseph, Arthur, Edmond and Omer Tetreault, Eva Renaud, Jeannette Girard and Aline Lockhart. Claire resided in the Southbridge and Sturbridge areas most of her life before moving to Marshfield in 1984, she had resided in Seekonk since 1987. She was a 1945 graduate of Mary Wells High School, Southbridge. Claire retired in 1983 after a thirty-eight year career with the American Optical Company, Southbridge, where she held a number of positions in cost accounting. She was a Boston Red Sox fan. Born in Fall River, the daughter of the late Arthur M. and Deolinda (Rapoza) Borges, Rita worked as Pre-K teacher’s aide for over 30 years at the former St. Anne’s Elementary School, prior to retiring. She leaves four children, Cheryl Canuel (Maurice) of Swansea, Robert J. Marsland, Jr. (Jay Mello) of Assonet, Linda Wood (Donlie) of Easton, and Lisa Gravette (Tony) of Tiverton; grandchildren, Beth and Amy Canuel, Katlyn Pacheco, Jamie and Bailey Gravette and David Marsland; sisters, Geraldine Miranda and Eileen Martin; and several nieces and nephews. She was the wife of the late James W. “Bill” Hindley. They had been married for 68 years. Born in East Walpole, MA, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Grace (Kilbourn) Smith. She resided in Lincoln for 78 years and was an active member of Chapel Street Congregational Church in Lincoln. She traveled extensively with her husband, particularly under the auspices of the Pawtucket Rotary Club and the YMCA. She also hosted many international visitors and relatives from England and Australia in Lincoln and her summer home in Mashpee, MA. She leaves three sons, Jay and his wife, Eunice of Chepachet, Anthony and his wife, Carol of Mashpee, MA and Philip and his fiancée, Patricia Moreau of South Kingstown; eight grandchildren, Jill Lawrence; Eden Spierdowis; Erik, Scott and Mark Hindley; Stephanie Hindley; and Bradford and Marshall “Mark” Gould; and fifteen great grandchildren. Her brother, Dr. Stephen Smith, Jr. was lost in World War II. Per her wishes, there will be no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Born in Providence, a son of the late William H. and Dorothy E. (Lisbon) Johnson, Sr., he had lived in Warwick before moving to North Kingstown fourteen years ago. Bill was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He worked as a maintenance engineer for the Providence Gas Company for thirty-two years before retiring in 2007. He previously had worked as a carpenter for Johnson Construction. He was a member of the Carpenters Union, the Gas Company Union, the Gaspee Days Parade Committee, the Johnson Post Anglers and was a past president of the Rhode Island Federated Sportsmen. Bill was a Mason and a member of St. John’s Lodge #1P F&AM, the Scottish Rite Valley of Providence, Providence Court #71 Royal Order of Jesters and of the Rhode Island Shriners where he served in 1999 and 2000 as Chief Artisan. Besides his wife he is survived by his daughters: Gretchen A. Donald and her husband Jeffrey of Warwick and Christian Johnson of Warwick; his step-daughters: Jennifer L. Hannan and her husband Brian of Hamden, CT, Sarah E. Heller and her husband Hunter of Campbell Hall, NY and Rachel J. Rochette and her husband Mark of Kensington, CT; his step-son Kenneth J. Tackett of Campbell Hall, NY; his sister Carole Aldridge and her husband Jack of Warwick; his brother Robert E. Johnson and his wife Kathy of Floral City, FL; twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Dorothy Stamper, Elaine Hock and Evelyn Hollingshead. A Navy veteran of WW II, he was Past Commander of American Legion Post 303. He was an American Red Cross Regional Manager, National Disaster Specialist and volunteer and a Life Member of the Swansea Police Association and Somerset Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was the father of Charles A. “Chuck” Gardella, Jr. (wife Donna) of Little Compton and the late Corporal William K. Gardella, USMC (killed in action in Vietnam); the grandfather of Angeline Gardella; the son of the late Steven and Hannah (Flaherty) Gardella; and also leaves brothers and sisters. Besides her loving husband of 44 years, she is survived by her daughters: Sandra DeCosta of Fall River & Linda Ann Crowley of Spring Hill, FL; grandchildren: Patricia Tavares, Cheryl & Jeremy Cowen; great grandchildren: Adriannah, Kaleb, Zoe; siblings: Marion Crowley of Somerset, Sheila Torren of FL, & Manuel Amaral Jr. of Fall River; many nieces & nephews. She was the sister of the late Edward Machado. Her funeral will take place from the MANUEL ROGERS & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 1521 N. Main St. FRIDAY at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church at 10:00 A.M. Interment in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours THURSDAY 5-8 P.M.

Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Jacob Joseph Levine and Seena (Baker) Levine, she resided on the East Side of Providence before moving to Central Falls six months ago. She enjoyed reading books and spending time with the children at the Providence Library, Hope St. She leaves a daughter, Melissa R. Gordon of Central Falls; a son, Jason B. Gordon and his wife, Mattie in Connecticut; a sister, Ann Broomfield of Pawtucket and four grandchildren, Jacob, Sophia, Emma and Stephen Gordon. Services will be private.
