(12/17/12) Lincoln - Nelson E. \"Nellie\" Kay, 83, of Andrews Drive died unexpectedly Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, North Providence. He was the husband of the late Florence N. “Florrie” (Jarvis) Kay.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Edgar C. and Emma (Watson) Kay, he had lived in Pawtucket for most of his life before moving to Lincoln 4 years ago.
Mr. Kay was a metallographer for Grinnell Corporation, Providence and later for Thielsch Engineering, Cranston for many years before retiring.
He was a member of Smithfield Avenue Congregational Church, Pawtucket for over 65 years. He was an Assistant Scout Master for BSA Troop #1, Pawtucket.
An active Mason, Nellie was a 60-year member and Past Master of Jenks Lodge #24, F. & A.M., Pawtucket and a Past Master Councilor of Pawtucket Chapter Order of DeMolay and a member of its Legion of Honor. Nellie was a Right Worshipful District Deputy Associate Grand Chaplain for the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons for the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations for many years and was made an Associate Grand Chaplain Emeritus of the Grand Lodge. He was a member and Past High Priest of Pawtucket Royal Arch Chapter, #4; Member and Past Illustrious Thrice Master Pawtucket Council of Royal and Select Masters #2 and was a Past Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council; Member and Past Commander of Holy Sepulchre Commandery #8 KT, and Grand Sentinel of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar and Appendant Orders of Massachusetts and Rhode Island; Member, Past Governor, Past Grand Governor of the Order of the Purple Cross of What Cheer York Rite College #42; Member and Past Prior of Roger Williams Priory #48 K.Y.C.H.; Member and Past Excellent Chief of Colonial Council #19, Knight Masons; Member and Past Puissant Sovereign of Red Cross of Constantine; Member of Scottish Rite, Valley of Providence; Member of the Royal Order of Scotland; Member and Past President of the Masonic Veterans Association; and a member of Gaspee Order #99, Swords of Bunker Hill.
He was a Korean War Army veteran.
He is survived by one daughter, Bethany K. Thurber and her husband, Alvin of Pawtucket; four sons, David N. Kay of Pawtucket, Charles E. Kay and his wife, Charlene of Pascoag, Mark W. Kay and his wife, Rachel of Lincoln and Thomas J. Kay of North Providence; one brother, Richard Kay of Norton, MA; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Masonic Memorial Service will be held THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20 at 7:30 P.M. at BELLOWS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 160 River Road, Lincoln.
His Funeral Service will be held FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21 at 10 A.M. at BELLOWS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Burial, with military honors, will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
