(10/29/12) Pawtucket – Milton E. Noble, age 90, Registrar Emeritus of Brown University and a lifelong resident of Pawtucket, died Friday, October 26, 2012 at the Hattie Ide Chaffee Home, East Providence.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joyce (Tetlow) Noble and three children, Robert Noble and his wife, Beverly of Attleboro, MA, Beth Zins of Pawtucket, and Lynn Hunter and her husband, Thomas of Auburn, NY; ten grandchildren, Andrew, Kathryn, Jeffrey and Lauren Noble, Stephen, Daniel and Ryan Zins, and Justin, Craig and Alison Hunter; three great grandchildren, Landon, Charlie and Nicolas Noble; and one nephew and two nieces, Russell Noble, Janice Keetly and Norma Jean Waring.
He was the son of the late Arthur H. and Mary E. (Aker) Noble and the brother of the late A. Herbert Noble, Jr. and Norman R. Noble.
Mr. Noble graduated from Pawtucket High School and Brown University, being elected Phi Beta Kappa (Class of 1944, but graduated in 1946). He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a co-pilot on heavy bombers reaching the rank of Second Lieutenant before the war ended.
He worked for Brown University for 38 years, the last 22 years serving as University Registrar until his retirement in 1984. In this role, he also served as secretary of many important committees including the Educational Policy Committee and the Committee on Academic Standing.
He was an active life-member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, Pawtucket. His service there included 20 years as a Deacon, and College-age Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Superintendent, and almost every committee at the church. No job was too big or too small. At age 87, after many years working in the church library, he envisioned and created a children’s library that would be a resource center for children in the community as well as the church.
He was also involved in the church-related activities at the state level. He was co-founder of the R.I. Association of Evangelical Churches, serving as their first president and first Executive Director. He was also Chairman of the Greater R.I. Billy Graham Rally held at the Civic Center in 1982. Mr. Noble helped to organize two interdenominational Coalitions created to influence legislation before the General Assembly: The Coalition to Preserve Traditional Values, and the Coalition for Life. In the 1990’s, he was a regular contributor of a column for the Providence Journal’s Face of Religion Page representing the voice of evangelical believers.
In addition to his church service, Mr. Noble valued education and served his community. He was elected to the Pawtucket School Committee in 1996. He ran as a community caucus candidate uniting Democrats and Republicans to become the top vote getter in that election. He served on the R.I. Association of School Committees chairing many committees. He also chaired the city-wide Blue Ribbon Committee to Study Aid to Private Education. Other areas of service included President of the Ten Mile YMCA Outpost and a member of the Board of Directors of the Pawtucket YMCA.
His service in the education arena included being a founding member of the New England Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and its first President. He was also a member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. He also served one year terms as a Trustee of Barrington College and as a Board Member of the Barrington Christian Academy.
His Memorial Service will be held SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3 at 12 Noon at Woodlawn Baptist Church, 337 Lonsdale Avenue, Pawtucket. His burial will be private.
