(08/15/15) Ronald “Pete” J. Martel Sr., 78,formerly of Canterbury, CT; beloved husband of Sheila (O’Brien) Martel, passed away on Friday morning, August 7, 2015 at the Mystic HealthCare & Rehab. He died peacefully in his sleep, with his wife at his side, following a long six year struggle with a debilitating illness. In addition to his wife Sheila, he is survived by his daughter Amy Kemp and husband Tony of Sterling, CT and his son Ronald J. Martel Jr. and wife Barbara of Texas. He will also be missed by his step-daughters Michelle O’Brien and Karen Oliver, both of Westerly, RI and his stepson Michael O’Brien and wife Amy of Stockholm, ME. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Christina Giacobbe and husband Joe, Jason Fisher and wife Shawna, Mark Fisher, Jeffrey Jackson and Cara Smith and husband Phil, and his great-grandchildren, Julian, Andrew, Camryn, Connor, Ethan, Brennan, Mikayla, Liam, Joseph and Harper. He was predeceased by his first wife, Deborah.
Pete was born in Hartford, CT on September 26, 1936, the son of the late Louis and Catherine (McNerney) Martel. He was a truck driver for many years for the Mahr Brothers and a member of the Teamsters for over forty years. After his retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling around the country and seeing new places.
We would like to thank all of the dedicated employees that we affectionately referred to as “Pete’s Angels” at both Regency Heights in Danielson, CT and Mystic HealthCare and Rehab in Mystic, CT. The love and care that they showed to Pete during his long, difficult struggle helped to keep a smile on his face and warmth in his heart.
A Memorial Service will be held at Central Baptist Church, 16 Elm St., Westerly, RI at 10:30 am on Monday, August 24th, 2015.
