Roland J Gill - Warwick, RI

(02/04/15) Roland J. Gill, 86, of New London Avenue, died Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Cedar Crest Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre in Cranston. Born in Boston, MA, a son of the late Giles and Mary (Roland) Gill, he lived in Fairhaven, MA, moving to Warwick in 1992. Roland was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He later served four years with the Massachusetts National Guard, 212th Field Artillery Battalion, as a Communications Sergeant. For 37 years he worked as a mold press operator at New Bedford Tire & Rubber, a division of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, until the plant closed in 1986. After the plant closed, he worked for one week at the Goodyear Plant in Topeka, Kansas where he trained workers to operate the presses he had operated for so many years. He began driving a school bus for Laidlaw Transportation in 1995, now First Student, in the northern part of Rhode Island. He was still serving as a bus monitor three weeks prior to his death. Roland will be remembered as a loyal and trustworthy man. He is survived by his companion Deb Kresge of Warwick; five children: Marc Gill & his wife Paula of Thornton, CO, Douglas Gill & his wife Denise of Sun City, FL, Joanne Andrews & her husband Antone of Mattapoisett, MA, Lisa DeMoranville & her husband Richard of Fairhaven, MA and Michael Gill & his wife Jane of Bristol; thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Donald and Charles Gill. At his request there will not be calling hours or a service. After cremation, he has asked his family to scatter his cremated remains offshore in the Atlantic Ocean between New Bedford and Fairhaven, MA. Remembrances may be shared at www.carpenterjenks.com
