(12/13/14) John W. McDonough, of Coventry passed away December 11, 2014 at home. He was the beloved husband of 69 years to the late Lena (Hassell) McDonough. John was born on December 8, 1921 the son of the late Michael and Catherine (Hennigan) McDonough.
John enlisted in the R.I. National Guard in 1937 and retired as a CWO4 in 1981. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the 43d Signal Company, 43d Inf. Division in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leave clusters, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three battle stars.
John also served with NATO forces during the Korean War. He was P.N.C. of the 43d Inf. Div. Vets Association and was a member of USAA, MOOFW and the Providence Marine Corps of Artillery. He served as President of the R.I.W.S. and President of the East Greenwich Art Club; President of the R.I. Timers Guild and a member of the Providence Art Club and the Knights of Columbus.
John is survived by two daughters: Eileen Lussier (Robert) and Elizabeth (Betty Ann) McDonough, a son: John E. McDonough (Leslie); four grandchildren: Matthew (Melissa) and Ryan (Leslie) Lussier, John B. and Anne McDonough; a great-grand-daughter: Adrienne Lussier; and a sister: Helen Maguire. He was the brother of the late Paul McDonough, Grace Turner, Alice Berger and Rita Lesperance.
Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 9:30 A.M. from THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on 1-95) with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 596 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick. Visiting hours on Monday from 4 P.M. – 7 P.M.
Burial with military honors will follow in the R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
