(07/19/14) Cranston - Philip A. “Phil” Lundgren, 86, of Alexander Street, died Friday, July 18, 2014 at Linn Health Care Center, East Providence. He was the beloved husband of M. Barbara (Lacross) Lundgren with whom he celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on May 14, 2014.
Born in Providence he was the son of the late Alfons and Agnes E. (Ahlquist) Lundgren. Phil graduated from Cranston High School, Class of 1945 and Brown University, Class of 1950, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War and a past commander of American Legion Post 1, Providence.
For 39 years he worked for Amica Mutual Insurance Company retiring as an underwriting officer in 1989. Phil furthered his education and career advancement by achieving certification as a Chartered Life Underwriter and as a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter.
He was an active and lifelong member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Warwick where he served for many years as a Deacon and in numerous other capacities, as well as a member of the committee that oversaw the development and building of the Matthew Xxv Senior Apartments. He was a member of the Verdandi Male Chorus and the American Union of Swedish Singers.
Phil became a member of the Masonic Fraternity being raised to the degree of Master Mason in Harmony Lodge 9 F&AM Cranston in October of 1953. His other Masonic memberships include Scottish Rite Valley of Providence, the Rhode Island Shriners and Providence Court 71 Royal Order of Jesters.
He was a member of the Turks Head Club, Providence; the Brown University Hockey Association and the Society of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters. He was also a charter member of the Cranston Jaycees, and a member of the Goose Pond Lake Association and the Granite Acres Property Association of Canaan, New Hampshire.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: CAPT Karin E. Lundgren, USN (ret) & her husband, CDR Kevin L. Jones, USN (ret) of Virginia Beach, VA and Susan L. Mahoney & her husband Anthony of Cranston; two grandchildren: Ian Hall and Zoe Mahoney, and three nieces & one nephew. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Allen.
His family is remembering Phil as a devoted and loving husband and father. He shared a special connection with all animals, especially his Pugs. He had a great sense of humor and loved to golf, fish and spend time with family and friends at Goose Pond.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, July 22 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. A Masonic service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 6:45 PM. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 23 at 10:00 am at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greenwich Avenue, Warwick. Burial with military honors will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Warwick.
