(03/17/14) San Souci, Sister Madeleine F., 95, formerly, Sister Mary Augustine, a Sister of Mercy and nursing professional and educator, passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Mount St Rita Health Centre, Cumberland.
Born Madeleine San Souci in Providence, a daughter of the late Paul and Madeline (Darby) San Souci. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cumberland on September 8, 1936 and professed her final vows on August 16, 1942 at Mount St Rita.
Sister\'s teaching ministry included more than 40 years at Salve Regina University, Newport, where she was the first chair of the Department of Nursing. A former member of the Rhode Island State Nursing Association, she was very active in her profession. Prior to her time at Salve, Sister was the Director of the New Hampshire Nursing Association for 10 years.
Sister earned bachelor’s degree from Catholic Teachers College in 1944 and then a BS in Nursing from the Catholic University of America in 1948. In 1956 she was awarded an MA in in Nursing Education from Catholic University with special studies in biological and physical sciences and administration in schools of nursing. Sister Madeleine was awarded an honorary doctorate for her work in nursing from Salve Regina University.
In addition to her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy, Sister leaves many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Joseph San Souci, Marie Haigh, Bernadette Boyle, and Sister Marie Paulette San Souci, RSM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 11 a.m. in Mount St. Rita Chapel, Cumberland. Visitation will be at the Health Centre on Tuesday from 9:15 to 10:50 a.m. with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 a.m. Burial will take place in St Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket with the procession leaving from Mount St. Rita at 12:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mount St. Rita Health Centre, 15 Sumner Brown Road, Cumberland, RI 02864 or to the Sisters of Mercy, 15 Highland View Rd., Cumberland, RI 02864 will be appreciated.
