(12/01/12) Cranston – Vera A. (Johnson) Jennings, 102, formerly of Fairfield Road died Friday, November 30, 2012 at the Village at Waterman Lake in Greenville where she resided for eleven years. She was the beloved wife of the late Rev. Dr. Arthur F. Jennings to whom she was married 54 years.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late John Adolph and Alma M. (Swenson) Johnson, Vera attended East Providence High School and before her marriage worked for the Industrial Trust Company in Providence.
Vera and Arthur were partners in ministry and she worked alongside him in his pastorates in Rhode Island and Albany, NY. Vera was a long time member of People’s Baptist Church in Cranston. She found joy as a wife, mother and homemaker. Vera will be remembered for her faith, constancy and love.
She is survived by her daughters: the Rev. Phyllis E. Hackett of Harmony, RI and Lois F. Gaines of Versailles, KY. She was the proud grandmother of Karen E. Bennett of Cumming, GA, Christine A. Dietzel of Coventry, RI, Kathleen L. Young of Alpharetta, GA and Mitchell W. Gaines of Mt. Holly, NJ. She was especially loved by her five great grandchildren: Austin, Annie and Maggie Bennett, Emily and Conner Dietzel. Rounding out her family is her nephew Robert A. Merrill & family of Palm Bay, FL; the Rev. Dr. Lynne C. Holden, Woodrow B. Gaines, Gary M. Bennett Jr., Jason P. Young and Jason Bouchard.
Besides her parents and husband, Vera is preceded in death by her brother the late C. Edmund Johnson and sister the late Doris A. Merrill.
Interment in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence will be private and at the convenience of her family.
