(10/31/12) Gilbert Ferreira, 76, of Wisteria Drive, Coventry, RI, passed away on September 30th, 2012 after a three year battle with colon cancer. He was the husband of Clara (Motta) Ferreira. Born in West Warwick, he was the son of the late Manuel and Alcina (Perry) Ferreira. Besides his wife he is survived by his son Gilbert Glenn Ferreira of Houston, TX, a sister Mary Silva of West Warwick and a brother Manuel Ferreira of Coventry. He was predeceased by his sister Albertina Hendershot.
Gil served four years in the Navy, leaving as First Class Aviation Electronics Technician. He than worked as a Computer Field Engineer for UNIVAC (Unisys) and then Honeywell Inc. He joined GTE (Verizon) and in 1970 went on an overseas assignment with his family to the U.S. Army Missile range in Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. He flew every day to the Island of Roi Namur where he was responsible for the operation, maintenance and design upgrades of the three main frame computer systems at radar sensor ALTAIR. He returned to the U.S. in 1980 and then worked in the Peacekeeper Missile Program and subsequently retired from GTE after working in a National Security Agency program. He was a member of the West Warwick Elks and a Life Member of the PASC club and an avid golfer who never had a hole in one.
Visitation has been respectfully omitted. Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday November 10th at 9:00 AM at St. John & Paul Catholic Church in Coventry, RI. Collation to follow after Mass at Nino\'s in Coventry.
