(08/25/15) Philip V. Nash, 91, of Winnapaug Road, Westerly, died peacefully on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at his home. He had been living over the past four years in the loving care of his daughter in Westerly.
Born in Menton, France on April 15, 1924, Philip grew up in Warrenton, Virginia. He later attended Exeter Academy and Princeton University, Class of 1946, but because of the war effort Philip graduated from Princeton in 1948, after serving the interim period in World War II in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines, where he helped build radio relay towers used for U.S. pilot navigation. After graduation, Philip spent several years living in Haiti doing underwater photography, some footage of which was used by The Walt Disney Company. He was to return several times to his beloved tropics - the Caribbean and Pacific Islands - as a result of his earlier time spent there.
Philip spent the majority of his career on Wall Street in the commodity futures business in New York, starting first with Hayden Stone, then later Continental Grain among other companies. An avid golfer and runner, lifelong bird enthusiast and photographer, Philip spent many hours enjoying the outdoors and introducing these pursuits to both family and friends.
Philip is survived by his wife, Renate Nash; four children: Daphne Briggs of Oxford, England; Cecily Nash of Prescott, Arizona; Lisa Gosselin of Westerly, Rhode Island; and Philip Nash of Thetford, Vermont; and seven grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be private. Funeral services are under the direction of Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home & Crematory, 64 Friendship Street, Westerly.
Contributions in Philip’s name can be made to the Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island, 352 High Street, Block Island, RI 02807.
