Shanley, Sister Mary Marcella, 93, a Sister of Mercy, died August 20, 2015 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre in Cumberland.
Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Compton) Shanley and the
sister of the late Sister Mary Emily Shanley, RSM and Reverend Joseph Shanley.
A graduate of St. Patrick High School, Sister Marcella studied at Catholic Teachers College in Providence and pursued graduate studies in French at Assumption College. A life-long learner, Sister continued her education throughout her life as an avid reader and traveler.
Sister taught in parish schools throughout the Providence Diocese, and at St. Mary Academy Bay View, Salve Regina University, and Providence College. She also held administrative positions within the Mercy Community. In the 1970’s, Sister Marcella was engaged in religious education and parish ministry in the Boston Archdiocese before returning to Bay View.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 11:00 am in the Mount St. Rita Health Centre Chapel, Cumberland, RI. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:50 am at Mount St. Rita with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 am. Interment will be
in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sisters of Mercy, 15 Highland View Road, Cumberland, RI 02864 or Mount St. Rita Health Centre, 15 Sumner Brown Road, Cumberland, RI 02864 will be appreciated.
