(05/20/15) Michael F. Kelley, age 71 of West Warwick, passed away with his loving family by his side Sunday at Alpine Nursing Home, Inc., Coventry, RI.
Born in Warwick, RI, he was the son of the late Edward E. and the late Agnes (Brindamour) Kelley. He was the beloved husband to Judith S. (Pepin) Kelley; they were married for forty-nine years.
Michael was a graduate of Providence College class of 1965, where he earned his Master’s in Education, specifically Mathematics. He was a loving and caring teacher to many students that would go out of their way to see him. He taught at West Warwick High School from 1965 to 1995, Bishop McVinny Catholic School from 1995-1997, and Bishop Hendricken High School from 1997-2009.
He had a great passion for coaching. He was President of RIIL High School Golf Coaches’ Association for many years. He was the head coach for Deering Junior High School’s boys’ basketball team from 1965-1985, as well as a football coach. He was the West Warwick High School girls’ basketball head coach from 1985-1995. He was assistant coach for West Warwick High School boys’ varsity football for twenty-five years, and the West Warwick High School head varsity golf coach for twenty-nine years. Mr. Kelley was also the head North Kingstown girls’ basketball coach from 1996-1998 and then again from 2004-2010. While at North Kingstown High School, he was the assistant boys’ varsity football coach. He was the head golf coach at Shea High School from 1998-2004. Besides his high school coaching career, he coached at the collegiate level. He was the head women’s basketball coach at Rhode Island College from 1998-2004.
Michael received many awards as a coach; he was named “Coach of the Year” in 2008. He was also a basketball official for thirty years, including IAABO, Board 84 and RIBGBO for girls’ basketball for many years. He was inducted into the IAABO Hall of Fame. On his off time, he enjoyed roofing and siding houses with his best friend, Richard Tellier. He directed the summer basketball programs for Rhode Island College for many years. He was also a member of the golf team at Providence College.
Besides his beloved wife he also leaves his three daughters: Kristin D\'Ambrosca and her husband Alfred, Melissa Kelley, and Courtney Silva and her huband Daniel. He was also the loving grandfather to Greggory D\'Ambrosca, Andrew D\'Ambrosca, Jillian D\'Ambrosca, Jake Downey and Logan Downey
Calling hours are Friday, May 22, 2015 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 23, 2015 at St. Gregory the Great Church, 360 Cowesett Road, Warwick. Everyone is asked to go directly to church. Burial will be immediately following at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Coventry. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Michael’s memory to Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road, S.W. Lilburn, GA 30147 or Michael F.
