(02/24/15) North Kingstown - William D. Leonhardt, 91, died Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Kent Regency, Warwick. He was the devoted husband of the late Norma E. (Martin) Leonhardt to whom he was married 68 years and with whom he now rests.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Raymond H. and Susan (Jeffers) Leonhardt, he had lived in North Kingstown since 1965. Bill graduated from Gorton High School, Warwick in 1941. He served in the United States Navy as an aviation metalsmith from 1943-1945. He was employed by the Vennerbeck-Clase Company for 45 years retiring as Executive Vice President in 1986. For the next 15 years he served as a paid consultant for Cookson America.
He was a member of various associations in the jewelry industry, including the Providence Jewelers Club, and he was a past president of the Anawan Club. He was a member of Nathaniel Greene Lodge #45 F.&A.M., now affiliated with Harmony Lodge #9; the Scottish Rite Valley of Providence and the Rhode Island Shriners.
He is survived by four children: Gary Leonhardt & his wife Lucia of West Warwick; Sandra Merdinyan & her fiance Peter Santini of West Warwick; William D. Leonhardt, Jr. of Diamondhead, MS, and Carol Hagenberg & her husband Albert of Warwick; one brother: Raymond Leonhardt, Jr. of Harmony, ME; thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Leland Leonhardt.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at 10:30 am at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 - 8:00 PM. Burial with military honors will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
