(02/04/15) Coventry – Carl A. Schmidt, 85, of Charlotte Street died Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Marie M. (Flanagan) Schmidt.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Hans M. and Anna I. (Karstrom) Schmidt, he graduated from Cranston High School, attended Bryant College and served in the United States Marine Corps. He moved to Coventry in 1958. For many years he attended the Skip Wylie Luncheons held for the 1947 Cranston High School graduates.
For 35 years, Carl worked for the Atlantic Richfield Company, later known as ARCO. He spent most of those years working in their Providence gasoline distribution center before retiring in 1984. Carl was a master carpenter. His family cherishes the pieces he has made for them, especially the cradle for the grandchildren.
He is survived by four children: Michael P. Schmidt & his wife Christina of West Greenwich, Christine M. Tedeschi & her husband Gary of Richmond, Peter C. Schmidt & his wife Paula of New Bedford, MA and Anne M. Adamo & her husband Michael of Warwick; three brothers: Evert Schmidt of Warwick, H. Richard Schmidt of North Easton, MA and Walter Schmidt of Scituate and Carl’s companion Mary Hames of West Warwick. He was a devoted “Papa” to ten grandchildren and “Super Papa” to his thirteen great grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 6 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 7 at 9:00 AM in SS. John & Paul Church, 341South Main Street, Coventry. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Greenwich.
