(01/23/15) James F. Righie Sr., 82, died Thursday, January 22, 2014 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. He was the beloved husband of Edith (Mangano) Righie with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on May 21, 2014.
Born in North Providence, a son of the late Frederick Righie and the late Charlotte (Snyder) Peckham, he lived in Providence moving to Cranston in 1997. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked as a driver and warehouseman for Teamsters Local 251 for 30 years before retiring in 1995.
A very caring and honest man, Jim was devoted to his family and to his faith. As a member of Woodridge United Church of Christ Congregational, Cranston for 14 years, Jim served at one time or another on almost every board or committee at the church. He volunteered many hours of his time at the Interfaith Food Ministry, Cranston where he was also a member of the Board of Directors as Treasurer of the Ministry.
Jim also gave of his time serving as a past Exalted Ruler of Providence Elks Lodge #14 and as a member of Amercian Legion Post 56, Providence. In addition to his dedication to his church and community, Jim was also a valued neighbor due to his caring actions and warm, friendly personality.
He was an avid Red Sox fan. He enjoyed duck pin bowling and he loved spending time at East Matunuck State Beach. Like many other Rhode Islanders of his generation, he was a big hockey fan, especially of the Rhode Island Reds team that played at the former Auditorium on North Main Street in Providence.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son: James F. Righie, Jr.; his daughter: Susan E. Read & her husband Clifford; his brother: Robert Righie and his cherished grandson: Kevin James Read. He was the brother of the late Elizabeth Poons.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 25 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. His funeral service will be held on Monday, January 26 at 9:00 AM at Woodridge United Church of Christ Congregational, 546 Budlong Road, Cranston. Burial with military honors will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
