J. Albert Newton, Jr. - East Providence, RI

(12/27/14) East Providence – J. Albert Newton, Jr., 102, passed away on December 24, 2014 at Hallworth House, Providence. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Rodger) Newton. They would have celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary on March 20th. Born on February 6, 1912, he was a son of the late Joseph A. and Ruth (Brown) Newton. He and Elizabeth were residents of Rumford for over 60 years. Al graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon Academy, and was a 1935 graduate of URI. While at URI, he was a member of the Glee Club and was a fraternity brother of Beta Phi, now Phi Gamma Delta. He was in management at Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing for over 30 years before retiring. He was a member of the Providence Engineering Society, the Providence Art Club, the Rhode Island Historical Society, and served on the Board of Directors of the District Nursing Association of East Providence (which later became the East Shore Nursing Association) for 25 years. He was a member and deacon of Park Place Congregational Church, Pawtucket. He loved spending time at Briggs Beach in Little Compton and in Ogunquit, Maine. He loved swimming, gardening, traveling, and above all spending time with his family. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Meredith Partington and her husband, Gordon, and Phyllis Ross and her husband, Roger, both of Seekonk, MA. He was predeceased by his daughter, Cynthia Christopher. He also leaves six grandchildren, Jill (Baker) Pare, Jonathan Baker, Jennifer Baker, Carlton Christopher, Rodger Foss, and Amy (Foss) Brassard; seven great grandchildren; and one nephew. He was the brother of the late Russell O. Newton. His funeral service will be held Saturday, January 3 at 11 A.M. at Historic Swan Point Chapel, 585 Blackstone Boulevard, Providence. A Calling Hour will precede the funeral service from 10 A.M. Burial will follow.
