(12/06/14) Dr. George Spiro Shola, OD, 88, formerly of Providence, R.I. passed away on November 30, 2014. He was the husband of the late Virginia \\\"Chris\\\" Gorski Shola. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Spiro A. and Thomaida (Shunda) Shola. He leaves his daughters, Fidela and her husband Gary Niles, and Christal-Diane Shola, a sister, Dorothea S., a brother, Vangel S. and was predeceased by three brothers, the late Thomas S., John S., and Danny S. and sister, Elizabeth S.
He served in the Army, and was stationed in Macon, GA. He graduated from Providence College and Pennsylvania State College of Optometry in 1952. Later he attended Gesell Institute of Child Development of Vision in CT. He worked as a waiter at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence before opening his practices in the Alice Building in downtown Providence and a second office in North Scituate, RI. He dedicated his time to the Explorers Police Academy, Century Club and was a Fitness Leader at the YMCA. His hobbies included knitting, crocheting, woodworking, cooking, camping, and sailing and he belonged to the Clodhoppers and Friendly Mixers, square and round dance clubs. He resided with his daughter Christal-D. on Boone Lake and recently at Pendleton, Mystic, CT. Now he will continue the dance with his wife..T.T.E.O.T.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery Chapel, 301 South County Trail in Exeter, RI.
