(09/03/14) Donald L. Lyman, 92, husband of the late Anice K. (Kenworthy) Lyman, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, September 2, 2014 at the Westerly Hospital. He has been a resident of 62 Palmer Street, Pawcatuck since 1947.
Mr. Lyman was born in Westerly on August 6, 1922, the son of the late Leon W. and Hazel (Bennett) Lyman. He attended local schools and graduated from Stonington High School in 1939. A veteran of World War II, he served 3 ½ years with the 1288th Engineering Battalion in the US and Europe, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He also attended Clemson University as part of his military training.
In his younger years, Donald worked as a licensed electrician for several local electrical contractors. He was head of the security force at Dow Chemical in Gales Ferry and the US Postal Service for nearly 30 years. His postal work was mainly at the former Annex Station on Canal Street, Westerly where he was manager prior to his retirement.
Mr. Lyman was a member of the Pawcatuck Lodge #90 AF & AM and served as master in 1969. He also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was Patron of the former Ruth Chapter #44 of Pawcatuck three times. Currently he held a membership in the Deborah Chapter #9 OES of Westerly and was an honorary member of the Nestell Chapter #6 OES of Wakefield and the Martha Chapter #25 OES of North Kingstown. He was the Past Commander of the Eastland-Greenwood Post #152 American Legion of Pawcatuck and held membership in the Westerly Senior Center and Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. He was also a member of Christ Church where he was a former Sunday School teacher.
Donald is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Edward Matthews of Norwich, five grandchildren, Tracey, David, Celena, Donald and Edward, six great-grandchildren, Cory, Gavin, Hunter, Danica, Waylon and Hartley, his brother, Kenneth W. Lyman of Westerly and his nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his brother-in-law John A. Kenworthy.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 10:00 am at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly. Funeral services are under the direction of Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home & Crematory, 64 Friendship Street, Westerly.
