(09/02/14) WALSH, Sister Marietta, 78, a Sister of Mercy for sixty-one years and a semi-retired registered nurse and advocate for the aged died on Saturday, August 30, 2014. Born in Fall River, MA, she was the daughter of the late William and Helen (Anderson) Walsh.
She is survived by a brother, Raymond Walsh of Fairfax, VA and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Helen Walsh Hannafin and William Walsh.
Sister Marietta entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1953 and made her final vows on August 16, 1959. She was a graduate of sixteen years of Mercy education. She later received a Bachelor Degree in Nursing from Salve Regina College and a Master Degree from Boston University School of Nursing. The majority of Sister’s ministries were in nursing in hospitals, nursing homes and home care facilities. Sister taught for a short time at Mount St Mary Academy in Fall River and St Kilian’s School in Fall River. In 1970 Sister was appointed Director of Nursing and joined the original group of Sisters who opened Mount St Rita Health Centre where she remained in ministry until 1983. Sister continued in nursing ministry in North Bend, Oregon, Roger Williams Hospital in Providence and ministries in homecare at Family Resources in Woonsocket and Homefront Health Care in Providence. Sister was a nursing assessment coordinator for Nation’s Care Link until her semi-retirement in January, 2009.
Most recently Sister resided at Franklin Court Assisted Living in Bristol, RI where she continued her diligent research in the areas of aging and health. She has served on the Advisory Commission on Aging for many years.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Mount St Rita Health Centre Chapel, Cumberland. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:45
a.m. in the Warde Room of Mount St. Rita Health Centre with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 a.m. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
