Dr. Paul F Shannon, O.D. - North Providence, RI

(08/27/14) North Providence – Dr. Paul F. Shannon, O.D., 84, of Woodward Road passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Golden Crest Nursing Centre, North Providence. He was the husband of Norma I. (Nebiolo) Shannon. Dr. and Mrs. Shannon were married for 27 years. Born in Medford, MA, a son of the late Patrick F. and Leoneore A. (Gingras) Shannon, he grew up in Malden, MA and had lived in Seekonk, MA before moving to North Providence 30 years ago. Dr. Shannon was an optometrist with his offices in Seekonk for 40 years before retiring in 2007. He was a graduate of Malden Catholic High School. He was in the first graduating class of Merrimack College and had the honor of leading its commencement processional. He was a graduate of the New England School of Optometry. He was a lifetime member of the Massachusetts Society of Optometrists, also serving as its insurance commissioner at one time. An avid golfer, Dr. Shannon was a longtime member of Pawtucket Country Club where he served as a committee chairman and a member of its Board of Governors over the years. He was active in the Boys and Girls Club of Pawtucket. He was a talented piano player who wrote and played music. He was an exercise enthusiast and had run the Newport Marathon. He was a huge sports fan and loved the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and the Boston Bruins. He was a Korean War Army veteran. Besides his wife, he is survived by his four children, Lenore Gustafson (Eric) of Boston, MA. Paul F. Shannon, Jr. (Julie) of North Attleboro, MA, Edward Shannon (Nicole) of Cumberland, and Sarah Treanor (Paul) of East Providence; one sister, Patricia Walsh of Kissimmee, FL; ten grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Andrew Shannon. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held SATURDAY, AUGUST 30 at 11:30 A.M. in The Church of the Presentation, 1081 Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence. His burial will be private in St. Columba’s Cemetery, Middletown. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at BELLOWS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 160 River Road, Lincoln FRIDAY 4-8 P.M.
