(07/23/14) Torres, Gloria (Rucco) of North Kingstown, RI and formerly of Cranston, RI died at home July 22 at age 88. She was the loving wife of Geronimo S. Torres, MD for almost 53 years and mother of Elaine Torres Colarusso and her husband John of North Kingstown, and Joanne Torres Medici of Cranston. She was predeceased by her son David Mark Torres. She was the daughter of Vito Domenic Rucco and Carmela Mero Rucco. She was predeceased by her brothers Joseph and Robert Rucco. Gloria is survived by her sister Angela Maria Rucco and sister-in-law Yolanda Rucco. Gloria was adored by her three grandchildren, David Mark Colarusso, John Nicholas Colarusso and Helena Joy Medici. Emerson was her furry companion always at her feet when she was home.
Gloria met her husband Jerry at the Charles V. Chapin hospital where she worked as a nurse and he as a physician. They built a beautiful life together for their three children, living in Providence before moving to Cranston in 1972. Gloria was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and hosting family gatherings. After the death of her son David in 1980 she grew restless and began volunteering with psychiatric patients. She restarted her career in nursing, working at the Institute of Mental Health, loving and bringing her special talents to her patients on AM-5. She continued working for 10 years until her first grandchild was born. She was never idle during her retirement, cooking, taking care of the grandchildren and traveling with her husband. She delighted in being Jerry’s sidekick at a medical conference, driving to see a Broadway play in New York City or visiting friends in other states.
They made seven medical mission trips to the Philippines to aid the indigenous mountain people of the Philippines providing basic medical care to the poor and even assisted in building a small hospital.
She was a faithful communicant of St. Mark and Our Lady of Mercy Parishes.
Her funeral and visitation is Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 8:45 a.m. -9:15 a.m. at \"WOODLAWN\" Funeral Home 600 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mercy Church, East Greenwich. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery.
