(06/16/14) Providence- Childs, Ralph H., loving husband, father, grandfather and a good friend to many people he met along the road of life. Ralph died at the age of 91 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence just three months after he lost Doris, his wife of 68 years. He will be sorely
missed.
Born in Independence, Missouri, Ralph grew up during the Great Depression and left home at the age of 17 to join the U.S. Navy where he rose to Chief Petty Officer. He spent the next 20 years of his life living in Hawaii, California, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. His Navy career also led him to many foreign ports of call including the Antarctic and South America. One of the highlights of his career came when he served as an engineer on the warplane, the Mars, the largest seaplane of its kind at the time.
While based at Olathe, Kansas, he met and married the love of his life, Doris DiSaia, a vivacious Navy WAVE. They had two daughters, Paula and Pamela, both born in Honolulu. Following his retirement from the Navy, Ralph went to work as a Manager of Operations for Allied Service Company at T.F. Greene Airport in Warwick where he met many good friends in the airline industry.
Ralph was known for his dry wit, his integrity and his love for his family. He and Doris enjoyed many rounds of golf in both Rhode Island and Ft. Pierce, Florida, where they spent their retirement for nearly 20 wonderful years.
He is survived by his daughter, Paula, and her husband, Dr. Mark Rose of Medfield, MA and his daughter, Pamela Childs of Key Colony Beach, Florida. He also leaves three loving grandchildren: Haley, Rose of Boston, MA, Amanda Rose of North Kingstown, RI and Gregory Rose of Medfield, MA.
