(06/09/14) Coventry - August A. “Gus” Hoffman, 84, died Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Kent Hospital in Warwick after being stricken at home. He was the beloved husband of Muriel F. (Raquier) Hoffman with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this month.
Born in Bellingham, MA, a son of the late Alwin and Blanche (Staples) Hoffman, he was raised in Woonsocket moving to Coventry in 1967. He worked for 16 years as a security officer for General Dynamics’ Electric Boat Division, Quonset.
An athletic young man, he played baseball and basketball during high school. After graduating from Woonsocket High School he played amateur baseball until serving in the United States Army during the Korean War. A lifelong baseball fanatic and sports enthusiast, he played softball until he was 70 years old, golfed in a league at Coventry Pines Golf Course and enjoyed playing pool, ping pong and basketball.
He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association and American Legion Post No.2, West Warwick.
His family fondly remembers him as a devoted husband and father who was always there to provide encouragement, compassion, and a good joke to make everyone laugh.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Lynn Merry & her husband Robert of Andover, CT and Donna Crocker & her husband Todd of Coventry; one son: Thomas Hoffman of Coventry; one brother: Herman Hoffman of Dallas, GA and his two grandsons: Michael Crocker and Kyle Merry. He was the brother of the late Mary Hamilton, who died this past February.
His funeral service will be held at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick on Wednesday evening at 6:00. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home prior to the service from 3:00-6:00 PM. Inurnment with military honors will be held at 9:30 AM on Thursday June 12, 2014 at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
